About Construction Sport
Construction Sport started with a simple but powerful idea, that the people who build our world deserve better support. With deep roots in the construction industry, we've grown into something bigger, a construction organisation with passion and purpose at its core.
We are built to shine a light on the construction sector through positive, authentic media. That means news and features that reflect the real industry, stories from the people who live and breathe it every day, events that bring the sector together, and a podcast that gives construction a platform it deserves. We're here to tell the story of construction, honestly, proudly and loudly.
But there’s more to who we are.
The Industry's Mental Health Crisis Deserves Action
Physical safety in construction has come a long way. On-site fatalities have dropped significantly over the decades, a testament to the safety protocols that have been built into the culture of the industry. But that's only half the battle.
Mental health has long been the challenge in construction. Long hours, unsociable shifts, high-pressure environments, and the sheer weight of providing for families, it all adds up. Yet for too long, proactive support for construction workers has been ignored.
That's where our charitable objective come in.
Sport as the catalyst for change.
We chose sport and exercise as our vehicle for positive change, because sport does something nothing else quite can, it brings people together, creates communities, happiness and gives people permission to just be themselves for a while.
Through our charity, we organise events built around sport and exercise, creating spaces where construction workers can step away from the tools, away from the laptops, away from the noise, and simply let off steam alongside the people who understand exactly what they go through. These aren't just events; they're a lifeline. A reminder that you are not alone.
By Building Teams, We Save Lives
Construction Sport is the industry coming together, through the media that represents it, the events that unite it, and the community that sustains it. We are here to promote everything that is great about construction, and to fight for the people who make it great.
Together, we can make a difference.
The Founders Story:
In September 2019 Construction Sport Founder Steve Kerslake was on the verge of gaining official charity status, with this part of the plan coming to fruition it was time to source avenues for much needed funding.
Opting not to go down the typical route of charitable grants and bucket shaking Steve did things the way he has been known to do things many times, the hard way!
Literally knocking door to door approaching construction businesses asking them to back a very loose, unheard-of way of addressing the mental health in the construction sector, as many people did, they told Steve in a polite way to Foxtrot Oscar. Completely understandable, for Steve’s head and ideas are very much from a very different place to your average member of society.
However, there was a breakthrough! A lifeline! A little bit of hope!
5 people, 5 directors of 4 construction businesses, not so much believed in Steve, but probably just felt a little bit sorry for him. They leant out their hand to help get things moving. Big breakthrough, However, just a few months into the new partnership and very soon after the launch event of 2020 the world shut down due to covid.
Everything planned came crashing down, however these four businesses did not question a thing, they simply said hold tight we are here, and we will see this through together, when we come out the other side buy us a beer.
Those four businesses will always be known as the founding partners that made this all possible.
Meet Our Founders:
On behalf of Construction Sport, to the Founding Partners, thank you!
