ADHD
What is ADHD?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, activity levels and impulse control. It is present from childhood, but many adults are only diagnosed later in life, often after years of feeling that something did not quite add up.
ADHD is not a mental illness or a lack of intelligence. Many people with ADHD bring real strengths to work, such as energy, creativity, problem-solving and thriving under pressure. Hands-on, varied and active work, like much of construction, can suit people with ADHD well.
What are the different types of ADHD?
Inattentive: Mainly difficulties with focus, organisation and memory.
Hyperactive-impulsive: Mainly restlessness, impulsiveness and difficulty sitting still.
Combined: A mix of both.
What are the signs of ADHD in adults?
1. Attention and organisation:
- Difficulty focusing on tasks, especially paperwork or repetitive jobs.
- Being easily distracted.
- Losing tools, keys or phones.
- Poor time-keeping and missing deadlines.
- Starting tasks but not finishing them.
2. Hyperactivity and impulsiveness:
- Feeling restless or finding it hard to relax.
- Talking a lot or interrupting others.
- Acting without thinking, including risky behaviour.
- Impulsive spending.
3. Emotional effects:
- Mood swings and a short temper.
- Low self-esteem after years of criticism.
- Higher risk of anxiety, depression and substance use.
