Being a Carer

How can caring affect mental health?

A carer is anyone who looks after a family member, partner or friend who could not cope without their help because of illness, disability, a mental health condition or addiction. Many people don't think of themselves as carers. They are "just helping out".

Caring can be rewarding, but it can also be exhausting, isolating and stressful, especially when combined with full-time work. Carers often put their own needs last, and many experience anxiety, depression and burnout.

What are the signs caring is affecting you?

1. Emotional signs:

  • Feeling overwhelmed, trapped or resentful.
  • Guilt about not doing enough, or about wanting a break.
  • Low mood, anxiety or irritability.

2. Physical signs:

  • Constant tiredness and poor sleep.
  • Neglecting your own health.
  • Back pain or other strain from lifting.

3. Social and work effects:

  • Losing touch with friends.
  • Struggling to balance caring with work.
  • Money worries.

What are the statistics for carers in the UK?

Prevalence: The 2021 Census found around 5 million unpaid carers in England and Wales, and Carers UK estimates the real number across the UK is much higher.

Working carers: Many carers are also in paid work.

Health: Surveys by Carers UK consistently find that most carers report poor mental health or feeling stressed and anxious.

Rights: Carers have the right to a carer's assessment from their local council, and employees have a right to unpaid carer's leave.
