Childhood Trauma

What is childhood trauma?

Childhood trauma means frightening, harmful or deeply distressing experiences that happen while growing up. These are sometimes called adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). They include abuse, neglect, growing up with domestic violence, a parent with addiction or mental illness, family breakdown, or losing a parent.

The effects of childhood trauma can last into adulthood, affecting mental health, relationships, anger, trust and coping. Many adults, especially men, have never spoken about what happened to them. It is never too late to get support.

What are the signs childhood trauma may be affecting you?

1. Emotions:

  • Anger that feels hard to control.
  • Low self-worth, shame or guilt.
  • Anxiety, depression or feeling numb.

2. Relationships:

  • Finding it hard to trust people.
  • Fear of abandonment, or pushing people away.
  • Repeating unhealthy patterns.

3. Coping:

  • Using alcohol, drugs, gambling or risk-taking to cope.
  • Needing to be in control.
  • Being always on alert.

4. Memories:

  • Flashbacks, nightmares or intrusive memories.
  • Gaps in memory about parts of childhood.

What are the statistics for childhood trauma in the UK?

ACEs: A large study in England found that nearly half of adults had experienced at least one adverse childhood experience, and around 1 in 10 had experienced four or more.

Impact: People with four or more ACEs are at much higher risk of mental health problems, substance misuse and poor physical health.

Recovery: Support, safe relationships and therapy can reduce the long-term impact of childhood trauma.
