Chronic Pain

How is chronic pain linked to mental health?

Chronic pain is pain that lasts for more than three months. It can follow an injury or surgery, or be caused by conditions such as arthritis, back problems or nerve damage. In construction, years of heavy lifting, kneeling, vibration and repetitive work can lead to long-term pain in the back, knees, shoulders and hands.

Living with pain every day is exhausting. It can affect sleep, work, money, relationships and self-esteem. People with chronic pain are much more likely to experience depression and anxiety, and low mood can in turn make pain feel worse.

What are the signs chronic pain is affecting your mental health?

1. Emotional signs:

  • Low mood, frustration or hopelessness.
  • Anxiety about the future or about making the pain worse.
  • Irritability and anger.

2. Daily life:

  • Poor sleep.
  • Giving up activities you enjoy.
  • Struggling to work or worrying about losing your job.
  • Withdrawing from friends.

3. Coping:

  • Relying more and more on painkillers.
  • Drinking to dull the pain.

What are the statistics for chronic pain in the UK?

Prevalence: A major review estimated that between one third and one half of the UK population, around 28 million adults, live with chronic pain.

Work: Musculoskeletal disorders are one of the most common causes of work-related ill health in construction, according to the HSE.

Mental health: People living with chronic pain have much higher rates of depression.

Painkillers: Long-term use of opioid painkillers can cause dependence and often does not help chronic pain. Speak to your GP before changing any medication.
