Divorce and Separation

How can divorce and separation affect mental health?

The end of a marriage or long-term relationship is one of the most stressful events a person can go through. It can bring grief, anger, loneliness, money worries, housing problems and, for parents, the pain of spending less time with children.

Men in particular may lose their home, their daily contact with their children and their main source of emotional support all at once. Relationship breakdown is one of the most common factors in male suicide, so looking after your mental health during this time really matters.

What are the signs you may be struggling?

1. Emotional signs:

  • Persistent sadness, anger or bitterness.
  • Feeling rejected, worthless or like a failure.
  • Anxiety about the future, money or the children.
  • Feeling hopeless.

2. Behavioural signs:

  • Drinking or using drugs more.
  • Withdrawing from friends.
  • Throwing yourself into work to avoid feelings.
  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy.

3. Physical signs:

  • Poor sleep and appetite.
  • Exhaustion.

What are the statistics for divorce and separation in the UK?

Divorce: The ONS estimates that around 4 in 10 marriages in England and Wales end in divorce.

Families: Hundreds of thousands of children experience their parents separating each year.

Risk: Research consistently shows that men who are separated or divorced have a higher risk of suicide than married men.

No-fault divorce: Since April 2022, couples in England and Wales can divorce without blaming each other, which can reduce conflict.
