Men's Mental Health

Why focus on men's mental health?

Men experience the same mental health problems as anyone else, including stress, depression, anxiety and addiction. But many men have grown up believing they should "man up", cope alone and not show weakness. As a result, men are less likely to talk about how they feel or to ask for help, and more likely to turn to alcohol, drugs or overwork.

Construction is still a male-dominated industry, and it faces some of the highest suicide rates of any sector. Changing the culture on site, so that talking is normal, can save lives.

What are the signs a man may be struggling?

Men's mental health problems don't always look like sadness. Look out for:

1. Mood:

  • Anger, irritability or aggression.
  • Being quieter or more withdrawn than usual.
  • Loss of interest in work, hobbies or mates.

2. Behaviour:

  • Drinking or using drugs more.
  • Taking risks, such as dangerous driving.
  • Working excessively, or struggling to turn up.
  • Gambling.

3. Physical signs:

  • Poor sleep, headaches or stomach problems.
  • Constant tiredness.

4. What they say:

  • Talk of being a burden, feeling trapped or "what's the point".

What are the statistics for men's mental health in the UK?

Suicide: Around three quarters of suicides in the UK are men. Suicide is the biggest cause of death for men under 50.

Construction: The Lighthouse Charity estimates that around two construction workers take their own lives every working day in the UK and Ireland.

Accessing help: Men make up only around a third of referrals to NHS talking therapies.

Addiction: Men are more likely than women to be dependent on alcohol or drugs.
