Parenting Stress

What is parenting stress?

Being a parent is one of the most rewarding jobs there is, and one of the most demanding. Parenting stress is the pressure that builds when the demands of raising children feel bigger than the time, energy, money or support you have.

For parents in construction, early starts, long days, working away and unpredictable income can mean missing bedtimes and family life, and feeling guilty about it. Stress can also come from children's behaviour, health needs, school problems, or co-parenting after a separation.

What are the signs of parenting stress?

1. Emotional signs:

  • Feeling overwhelmed or like you're failing.
  • Snapping at your children or partner.
  • Guilt about not being there enough.
  • Feeling low or anxious.

2. Physical signs:

  • Exhaustion and lack of sleep.
  • Headaches and tension.

3. Behaviour:

  • Shouting more than you'd like.
  • Withdrawing from family life.
  • Drinking to unwind every night.
  • No time for yourself or your relationship.

What are the statistics for parenting stress in the UK?

Common: Surveys regularly find that most parents feel stressed about parenting at least some of the time.

Dads: Research suggests many fathers feel under pressure to provide financially while also being more involved at home, and are less likely to ask for help.

Support: Parenting courses and peer support can reduce stress and improve family relationships.
