Retirement and Life Changes

How can retirement and big life changes affect mental health?

Retirement is often seen as something to look forward to, but it can also be a major adjustment. After decades of early starts, hard graft and banter with the lads, suddenly stopping can leave people feeling lost, bored or without purpose.

Other big life changes can have a similar effect, such as leaving the trade because of injury, children leaving home, moving area, or health problems. Men in particular can lose much of their social circle when they stop working. Planning ahead and staying connected can make a big difference.

What are the signs you may be struggling with a life change?

1. Emotional signs:

  • Feeling low, flat or without purpose.
  • Loss of identity ("who am I if I'm not a builder?").
  • Anxiety about money, health or the future.

2. Behaviour:

  • Losing a daily routine.
  • Spending most of the day alone or in front of the TV.
  • Drinking earlier in the day or more than before.
  • Withdrawing from friends and family.

3. Physical signs:

  • Poor sleep and low energy.
  • Becoming less active.

What are the statistics for retirement and mental health in the UK?

Mixed effects: Research suggests that retirement can improve wellbeing for some people, but for others it is linked to loneliness and depression.

Loneliness: Age UK has highlighted that more than a million older people in the UK say they often feel lonely.

Staying active: Volunteering, hobbies, part-time work and groups like Men's Sheds are linked to better wellbeing after retirement.
