Keeping the railway on track: Why extreme heat is becoming a growing challenge

Extreme summer temperatures are becoming an increasing challenge for the UK's railway network. Designed largely for a temperate climate, much of the country's rail infrastructure now faces conditions it was never built to withstand, leading to delays, speed restrictions and disruption for passengers.
One of the biggest issues is the expansion of steel rails during periods of intense heat. As temperatures rise, rails can expand and, in some cases, buckle. To reduce the risk of derailments, trains are often required to travel at lower speeds during heatwaves, which can cause delays across the network. High temperatures can also affect overhead power lines, signalling equipment and trackside electrical systems.
As climate change makes hot summers more common, the railway industry is investing in ways to improve resilience. This includes using more heat-resistant track materials, installing sensors to monitor rail temperatures in real time, improving drainage and vegetation management, and designing new infrastructure that can cope with a wider range of weather conditions.
For the construction industry, adapting the railway presents a major opportunity. Engineers, contractors and technology specialists will play a vital role in upgrading existing infrastructure and delivering projects that are fit for a changing climate. Future rail schemes will increasingly need to consider not only capacity and performance, but also resilience to extreme weather.
With heatwaves expected to become more frequent, adapting Britain's railway is no longer simply a maintenance issue, it's an essential investment in the future of the UK's transport network.
