New Cambridge South station will officially open on 28 June, giving passengers direct rail access to the city’s Biomedical Campus Europe’s largest medical research hub.
Backed by more than £250 million in government funding, the station will offer up to nine trains an hour into Cambridge, alongside direct services to London, Stansted Airport and Birmingham. Passengers will also be able to connect to international rail services via St Pancras.
Expected to serve around 1.8 million passengers a year, Cambridge South will become the first station branded under Great British Railways (GBR). The new link is set to improve access to jobs, housing and healthcare, while supporting the continued growth of the Biomedical Campus, which already contributes billions to the UK economy.
The opening also marks another step in the government’s rail reform plans, with GBR aiming to bring Britain’s rail network together under one organisation and simplify the current system.
